Introducing Uttarakhand's Char Dhams

The Chota Char Dham Yatra includes pilgrimages to the four holiest shrines, which are scattered throughout the vast state of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath are the names of the four shrines.

People visit all three shrines, including Badrinath Dham, in order to reach Moksha because of its excellent connectivity and significance to pilgrims. It is one of India's most well-known and often visited pilgrimages. Around the eighth century, the great Hindu philosopher Adi Shankarcharya combined all four pilgrimage sites into a spiritual circuit, which his followers have followed as tradition ever since.

The Char Dham Yatra starts in May and ends in October, with the final dates being revealed on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya. Due to the geographic and climatic variability, all four Dhams have various opening and closing dates. In contrast, you can visit the main Char Dham Tour any time of year.

Why is the Char Dham Yatra a major Hindu pilgrimage?

Yamunotri Dham, named after the goddess Yamuna, is the first dham of the Yatra and is reputed to be able to atone for all sins with a single holy bath. River Ganga is claimed to have its origins at Gangotri Dham, where it is said to have arrived directly from heaven. Kedarnath Dham, which is also regarded as one of Lord Shiva's twelve Jyotirlingas, is located along the Mandakini River. Shri Vishnu's adobe, Badrinath Dham, is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River and is a stunning sight on the Garhwal River.

Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri Dham, the abode of the goddess Yamuna, is located at a height of 3293 meters in the vast Himalayas, amidst spectacular surroundings that include glacial peaks, glaciers, and hot springs. Since it is the starting site of the Char Dham Pilgrim Tour, thousands of devotees visit there every year. Janki Chatti serves as the starting point for the roughly 3-kilometer trip that pilgrims must take to go to the Temple. The journey to the Temple typically takes 3 hours, but you have the option of walking or riding a pony or palanquin. Yama's sister Yamuna is the offspring of the Sun God. The temple's primary deity is carved out of black marble.

Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham, which is devoted to Goddess Ganga, is the starting point of various high-altitude treks. The Temple, which offers a beautiful ambiance and breathtaking views everywhere, is accessible from Uttarkashi. According to mythology, Gaumukh, who is located at the Gangotri Glacier, is the source of the Ganges. As a penance, Lord Shiva gave King Bhagirathi a gift, but because the Earth would become overwhelmed by the Ganga's rapid flow, he imprisoned it in her hair (jata) and released it when the Earth moved slowly. The river was named Bhagirathi after leaving Gaumukh. The Ganga River is revered and venerated in many locations. You can reach Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri starting from Haridwar.

Kedarnath Temple

At a height of 3580 meters, Kedarnath Temple, the abode of Lord Shiva and one of India's twelve Jyotirlingas, is situated along the Mandakini River's bank not far from Chorabari Glacier. Experience the most beautiful scenery amidst snow-capped mountains throughout the chilly months of May and June. Many new constructions are being made in the area to improve security from natural disasters in the wake of the devastating flood that hit the area in 2013. Sonprayag or Sitapur serve as the starting points for the Kedarnath Trek.

The temple was built with excellent architectural and is made of slabs of grey stone that are so strong that high floodwaters cannot damage it. In the background of the Temple, pilgrims may see the Kedarnath mountain, Kedar Dome, and other Himalayan peaks.
